Description

This project is a conceptual redesign of the Spotify logo, aiming to reimagine the brand’s visual identity while retaining its core essence. My goal was to add a layer of intricacy to the existing design and introduce a relevant pictorial element that speaks more directly to music/podcast culture. Drawing inspiration from retro audio equipment—specifically the iconic silhouette of a vintage microphone—I explored ways to subtly integrate this into the logo while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. The result is a refreshed visual mark that feels more expressive, without losing the simplicity and recognizability of the original.

Process

I began by closely studying the current Spotify logo, evaluating its composition, balance, and overall visual impact. One notable aspect I identified was its slight asymmetry, which appears intentional but felt slightly unbalanced in certain applications. I saw this as an opportunity to refine the structure while introducing more character. With this analysis in mind, I created a rough sketch of my concept, which I then vectorized in Adobe Illustrator. The redesign features a clean, modern, stylized retro microphone—an element chosen for its direct relevance to both music and podcasting culture. Integrated within the microphone is a custom, stylized “S” that references Spotify’s initial while maintaining visual harmony with the icon. I intentionally left the original typography and color palette unchanged to keep the focus on the new pictorial element and form refinements. To bring the design into context, I created a mockup using Adobe Photoshop, replacing the existing Spotify logo on the podcast page of The Joe Rogan Experience, one of my personal favorites. This helped me evaluate how the new logo functions in a real-world setting and reinforced its flexibility across digital platforms.

Reflection

This redesign taught me how subtle additions can enhance a brand's personality when done with intention. Integrating the retro microphone pushed me to think beyond abstraction and consider how a pictorial element can reinforce the emotional connection people have with a product—in this case, the timeless, personal nature of music. It also challenged me to maintain simplicity and legibility while adding visual complexity. Ultimately, this project helped me develop a sharper eye for composition, symbolism, and brand storytelling through design.
