Family Connect
Project Type: UX/UI (Mobile App)
client: Fictional (Online Course)
role: Graphic Designer
tools used: Figma, Adobe Illustrator

Description
This project was part of the UX Design Google Certificate program on Coursera. The objective was to design a dedicated mobile app that helps families manage their schedules, tasks, and responsibilities effectively. Initially named Family Sync, the app was rebranded as Family Connect based on user feedback gathered during testing. Acting as the UX/UI Designer, I led the project from user research to wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and mockups. The goal was to create an intuitive and family-friendly app that simplifies coordination and reduces the communication barriers that often make managing family schedules challenging.
Process
The design process began with user research to understand the specific pain points families experience when managing schedules. I conducted an online survey targeting parents with young children, gathering insights about their frustrations and expectations. I also performed secondary research on family structures and reviewed four competing apps—Cozi, Family Wall, iCloud Calendar, and Google Calendar—to identify strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the current market. From this research, I outlined the major pain points: the need for clearer communication, real-time updates, shared accountability, and better visibility of all family members' commitments. To address these issues, I sketched paper wireframes, then digitized them into low-fidelity prototypes using Figma. I designed the app to include a shared calendar, Facebook-style feed, group chat, to-do list, and a map to enhance family coordination and visibility. I ran a usability study on the low-fidelity version, compiled insights, and created an affinity diagram to pinpoint themes for improvement. I then iterated on the wireframes and moved to high-fidelity prototypes, refining the design with clear color coding, modern typography, and intuitive layouts. A second round of usability testing was conducted, where I refined key elements based on participant feedback. Finally, I created polished mockups and visual design guides to illustrate the final concept.
Reflection
Designing Family Connect provided me with a hands-on understanding of building digital products that solve real-world problems. This project taught me the importance of user feedback, competitive analysis, and empathy mapping in shaping effective UX/UI solutions. Working through two rounds of usability testing deepened my understanding of how iterative design can enhance user experience and usability. This experience reinforced my skills in research-driven design and solidified my passion for creating intuitive, community-oriented digital products.
