Broken Machine
Project Type: Album Cover Redesign (Photoshop composite)
client: Mock Client (Real Album)
role: Graphic Designer
tools used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Description
Process
The project began with concept development and mood exploration guided by my mock client's art direction. I sourced the primary image of the cyborg woman, which already embodied themes of machinery and detachment. To illustrate the idea of joy fading away, I designed a custom swirling musical staff in Adobe Illustrator and integrated it into the image using layer masking in Photoshop. The staff was positioned behind the cyborg's neck with an ethereal outer glow, symbolizing how joy lingers distantly in memory. I applied a dark blue and white gradient map to create a cold, melancholic tone, enhancing the sense of isolation. Clipping masks and feathering techniques were used to create the static effect on the cyborg’s eyes, symbolizing disconnection and fading awareness. I crafted a pixelated, glitch-inspired background using custom Photoshop brushes to represent fragmented memories and corrupted perception. Subtle adjustments were made using the Liquify tool to alter the cyborg’s mouth, giving her expression a more sorrowful and introspective look. To expand the original image seamlessly, I used Photoshop’s Generative Expand feature, which allowed for smooth extension of the digital canvas. Various adjustment layers—hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and vibrance—were applied to fine-tune the atmosphere. Typography was chosen to mimic glitch-like distortion, enhancing the dystopian aesthetic.
Reflection
This project pushed my understanding of digital compositing and conceptual storytelling through visual art. Working with advanced Photoshop techniques, such as layer masking, gradient mapping, and generative expansion, allowed me to manipulate emotion and atmosphere effectively. Designing the swirling musical staff in Illustrator taught me how vector elements can be seamlessly integrated into photo composites. This redesign of Broken Machine not only challenged me creatively but also reinforced my ability to communicate abstract ideas through visual design, turning emotion and narrative into tangible art.
