Description

This project was part of the Graphic Design Masterclass - Learn GREAT Design on Udemy. The objective was to create a new movie poster or redesign one for an existing film. I chose Jurassic World, one of my favorite movies, and reimagined its official poster to capture the intensity and chaos of one of its most iconic scenes. My goal was to create a high-energy composition that pulls the viewer directly into the danger and thrill of the film. This project was my first attempt at a movie poster Photoshop composite, pushing me to explore advanced techniques like generative AI, layer masking, custom Photoshop brushes, and environmental effects like rain and lightning.

Process

I began by selecting key visual elements that represented the essence of Jurassic World: the towering T-Rex, the flipped car, frightened main characters, and a populated area within the park. Using generative AI, I sourced additional assets that would complement the composition. I layered these elements in Adobe Photoshop, applying advanced masking techniques to seamlessly blend them together. The T-Rex was positioned as the dominant focal point, with the overturned car conveying its raw power and destructive capability. To bring the scene to life, I created rain and lightning effects using custom Photoshop brushes and layer styles. The rain was created using filter > render > fibers features in photoshop, with downloaded brushes to create droplets hitting. Lightning was added using a combination of brushwork and blending modes for realism. Atmospheric elements, like mist and shadows, were used to anchor the characters and vehicles into the environment. For typography, I chose the iconic Jurassic Park font, adding a red neon glow for contrast against the stormy background. The tagline "The Park is Open." was positioned prominently to capture the spirit of the film's suspense and grandeur.

Reflection

This project was a major step forward in my Photoshop compositing skills. It challenged me to manage complex layering, atmospheric effects, and narrative-driven design. Experimenting with generative AI for asset sourcing expanded my understanding of integrating diverse visual elements into a cohesive design. I also deepened my skill set in creating realistic weather effects and dramatic lighting to amplify storytelling. Redesigning Jurassic World's poster not only honed my technical abilities but also solidified my appreciation for cinematic design and its power to evoke emotion and excitement.
